PROVIDENCE 2

Continued from Providence 1
“There was no penitence for the grievous sin he had just committed” was what rang in his head. Mr. Combs died a day after the incidence; while thinking in his study of the injustice done to him by his best man and his wife. Coupled with the injustice meted on Steve’s pregnant wife and family. His conscience pricked him to think that Lilly assisted in burying Steve at their backyard. Doctor’s autopsy reported that Mr. Combs died of high blood pressure while Steve was declared missing.

Lilly mourned for a month or less and soon Loretta’s home became a home for reverend Paul as well. The situation presented him with the best of excuse for the frequent visit. “He was consoling an emotionally fragile widow.” Loretta was treated harshly even though her father was rich.  She was 14 years old when her father died. Lilly made sure she experienced hardship till she left the house. Loretta eventually married Frank for his money, as she was ambitious and needed to further her education. In this bid, she left John who was only able to offer her love at that moment to be with Frank, a manager in her father's company, he was also a chameleon. Marriage was an eye opener for her as it revealed Frank's true identity. He comes home drunk and beats her as he pleases. These beatings made her lose her first pregnancy for him.

It’s been a year they’ve been married and things have become worse. However it seemed lady luck smiled on her as she saw John in the pharmacy when she was about to pay for her post-miscarriage drugs. She was elated; John owned the pharmacy, held no grudges and was still very much in love with her. They fixed dates and kept seeing, the love butterflies rushed back into her belly. She cared less about her ambitions, she just wanted to love.

“HUMAN BONES FOUND AT THE COMB’S BACKYARD“ , was the headline of the paper her husband brought home to spite her. She was sad after she read that her step mum had blamed the incident on her father and was arrested for obstructing justice. While in grief, her phone rang, she picked up and spoke to the masculine voice that brought smiles to her face. Unknown to Loretta, her father had left her 80% of his properties and money but with a clause that she had to be married at least for a year to be the full custodian. Lily the temporary custodian did well to conceal the contents of the will as she was small and naïve then. Now the truth was out, she was finally free to further her education and live a love filled life with John. She packed her valuables, concealed it not to arouse suspicion and ran out of the house to her family lawyer so as to finalize the details of the will.

Frank bewildered by her quietness, decided to slap her again. Owing to her sharp reflexes she caught hold of his hand before it reached her face, she scratched his face with her fingernails and kicked him hard where it mattered. Loretta went upstairs, took her bag, watched Frank hold his manhood in agony and dropped him a note, explaining how her love had found her and how she will be firing him the next day. She walked out like a runway model, knowing she was finally free and good days were coming her way…
